Each of these lanterns is inscribed with a phrase in Latin, which when combined form an excerpt of the text from the book, Hypnerotomachia Poliphili printed by Aldus Manutius in Venice in 1499. Manutius, the namesake for this collection, was known for his innovations in printing, including having introduced the idea of portable sized books and reinstating the use of Roman characters.
