Ciboure Pottery & R. Gaïtaud

Vase with Handles and Images of the Basque Countryside

France, circa 1950

POTCC 30

Description

Glazed high-fired stoneware

This is a two-handled vase decorated with folkloric images of Basque countryside, painted by Basque native R. Gaïtaud.  Produced in the period of Rodolphe Fischer's leadership. Painter’s signature in the décor "Gaït", marks on the base:"Capbreton" and "Grès D'Art Basque Déposé Gaïtaud R".

After the Neo-Greek decorations, which were major commercial successes for Ciboure, the second most commercially successful type of decoration was that depicting Basque village scenes. Indeed, Ciboure is located in the Basque Country, in the southwest of France, very close to Spain—an area steeped in ancient and deeply rooted folklore, renowned in particular for its local language, traditional costumes, dances and songs, gastronomy, and a sport: Basque pelota. Ciboure pottery could only promote this rich terroir and heritage, and through this type of production contributed to the international dissemination of Basque identity.
