This type of seat, with its highly distinctive shape, was used to accommodate important individuals in Venetian gondolas during the 18th century. Indeed, in the Italian lagoon city, the main means of transport at the time was the gondola. As a result, in order to remain stably seated on such a fragile vessel, the chair’s legs had to be set very widely apart. The central body sometimes contained a compartment used to store the precious belongings of the person being transported. The shell-like shape of the seat and the scrolling motifs correspond to the Rococo style of the period. The use of lacquer also reflects the taste for Chinese objects, which were highly fashionable in 18th-century
Venice. Stamp on seat rail reads "IL CC VENEZIA 53215 452 MOBILI"
