Kevin Grey is a Silversmith who is changing the way that silver is used as a medium for sculptural decorative arts. His work is an ongoing journey of discovery and exploration of this versatile material. His unique fabrication processes result in works which are highly crafted art forms – as unique and modern as they are sophisticated, elegant and bold.
Grey graduated from the Birmingham School of Jewellery, United Kingdom, in 2009 having previously spent over 20 years handcrafting bespoke parts for the luxury automotive industry. Working for Bentley, Rolls Royce and Morgan cars, he developed a wealth of hand-crafted, precision-led fabrication techniques to tackle any design challenge.
Utilizing modern technologies such as Laser and TIG welding, his creations in silver are a testament to what happens when a traditional craft gets reassessed with a modern, highly skilled hand and mind. He is able, as no other silversmith has, to tackle questions of what might be achieved with the versatile material of silver, rather than what has already been achieved. Grey sees silver as a supremely adaptable, sensual medium. For him it is an amalgam of all the best qualities of the metals he has worked with in his distinguished career. He is able to confidently arrange contrasts of smooth, sharp, light and dark; complex surfaces over bold shapes to achieve wholly unique sculptural forms that confidently communicate with the environments that they adorn.
In recognition of his achievements in silversmithing, Grey was awarded the highest prize for Designer Silversmiths, The Goldsmiths Company Award in 2010, 2012 and again in 2014.
