Alain Girel

Large-scale Urn

France, 1995

GIREA 128

Description

Medium: Polychromed and gilt ceramic

Dimensions: 67" high x 22" wide

With this piece, the French sculptor and ceramist Alain Girel reveals his theatric dedication to the western artistic tradition, as well as his capacity to fuse elements of disparate periods and movements into his creations -- works extraordinary both for their consummate creativity and meticulous execution. This large-scale urn is glazed largely in striking sky-blue, but, at its visual center, depicts a Tuscan landscape studded with gilt vessels. It is rimmed with gilt borders and adorned with mischievous flying cherubs.

From the Alain Girel collection.
