Ceramic Relief of Abstract King and Queen

France, circa 1970

DANIB 10

Description

Glazed stoneware, canvas, wooden frame

Height: 40.5" - Width: 31.75"

Intricately sculpted, this panel depicts a stylized king and queen in low relief. Son of Polish farmers in Northern France, he was apprenticed after the war to a potter's workshop where he learned to throw on the wheel. With a friend he briefly occupied a bombed-out earthenware factory then setting up his own workshop. As he developed his practice, the majority of his output came from the long-running collaboration with  furniture designers Robert Guillerme and Jacques Chambron and their line, Votre Maison, 1953, to his sudden death in 1979.
