High-backed Sofa

France, circa 1938

DOLT 01

Description

Prelle upholstery, natural wood legs

Height: 43.5" - Width: 86.75" - Depth: 40.25"

The brilliantly designed 1930s sofa curves at its front, is braced by two generous, rolling arms, and is crowned with high back which rises to a high central point from either side, giving the impression of two gently rolling waves on the verge of breaking. Initially specializing in garden furniture in the 1920s and early 30s, Pierre Dariel went on to found Maison Dolt on the Rue Pierre Charron, near the Champs-Élysées, known for its highly baroque creations, reminiscent of Serge Roche, and characterized by a strong sense of theatricality.
