Maria Lagorio, who studied under the "World of Art" members Bilibin and Lanceray, fled Russia after the revolution. Her early graphic works, largely illustrations for books, were replaced in later life with more personal paintings. In this, a female nude modestly draped in flowing fabric stares off to the right, either focused on someone or something outside of the frame, or absorbed by her own thoughts. In either case, Lagorio's portrait serves as a piercing work of interiority.
