Thierry Despont, best-known as a very successful architect, was also an accomplished artist. In his painting practice, when not analyzing the smallest, most detailed creatures of the natural world (such as fish or insects) he was at work on its largest — on moons, planets, galaxies, and the cosmos. Starting in the early 1990s, space became something of an obsession for the the artist — and nowhere is this more evident than in his striking, poetic paintings of interstellar bodies, frequently executed on suitably oversized wooden panels. This work hung in the lobby of his TriBeCa architectural studio.
