Thierry Despont was best-known for his very successful architectural practice—but he was also an accomplished artist. Some of his most interesting works are a series of sculptures fashioned out of found—often industrial or farm—tools or components. When not sculpting insects or planets, he most frequently created masks. By modeling his works after tribal, antique, and ceremonial relics, he created a playful juxtaposition between the modernity and utility of his materials and the timelessness and spirituality of his subject matter.
