Gary DiPasquale works largely in the vase and vessel form, inspired equal measure by nature — the textures and colors he finds on tree bark, plants, rocks, and minerals — and the ceramic traditions of other cultures and epochs — those of the Mediterranean, Asia, and Africa, dating from the ancient to the Art Deco.
All his works are hand-built, some using various slab-construction techniques, others thrown on a potters wheel. Often he achieves his unique effect with the use of colored clay slips, brushed on for the first firing, or by applying several layers of glazes. Pieces might be fired once or multiple times. The results can be rugged, with crackled dry glazes or sleek, bronze and metallic. His use of copper, manganese, and iron oxide gives many of his pieces a unique color and depth — textured surfaces that sparkle and shine.
